Unique Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup Features

Friday 20 June 2014

There are several ways that the Luv Ur Body Cups stand out from the competition. Here are some for your review.

Cup Capacity
The Luv Ur Body Cup has the largest volume on the market to guarantee up to 12 hours of protection. There is no need to frequently empty your cup during the day. This makes it ideal for traveling, long car rides or plane trips as opposed to smaller volume brands which you'd most likely have to empty more often.

 V Shape
The unique "V" shaped air vents in the Rim of the Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup aid suction release during removal so that one doesn't feel like they have to tug at the cup during removal.

The Soft Swell
The part of the cup that bulges out just under the Rim is called the "soft swell." This design feature helps to add a bit more capacity to the Cup and helps achieve the goal of larger capacity for our cups. It also helps the cup to glide out easily.

Flower Design
The Luv Ur Body cup has flower designs all over the body, not just for aesthetics but to create "slip resistance" with the vaginal RUGAE or bumpy inner wall to prevent the Cup from slipping out when the user "bears down". Most other brands are smooth on the outside, thus when a woman sneezes, laughs, squats or bears down to poo, the cup starts to slip out of the vaginal canal. A lot of women experience this so much that if they don't hold onto the cup while bearing down to poo, their cup could fall into the toilet. No one likes holding her cup in place while pooing! The smaller flowers at the base, also provide grip for removal.

The Ball and Stem
The cup has both a ball and leaf stem for grip and removal. Instead of cutting off the leaf stem, the cup could possibly be turned inside out, or if the leaf stem is cut off, one would still have the small ball. The ball is small enough not to be felt or to cause any discomfort. The leaf stem is short, soft and flexible and is hardly felt.

The Medium Cup
The medium Luv Ur Body cup is slightly slimmer and longer in length than the large size. This unique design is ideal for women who have a low cervix during menstruation that tends to add extra volume to the menstrual fluid in their cup thus causing the contents to rise, bubble or leak. This is similar to what happens when pebbles are added to a half glass of water, air bubbles/pockets will try to escape and fluid volume will rise and possibly overflow.  That is why when such women take out their cups to empty it, they find its only half full, yet its already leaking or bubbling up every few seconds when they move and the bubbling makes them uncomfortable and worried.  Through our brand design, we have tried to address these concern by making cups which are slimmer and taller to give the cervix more room in the cup so that each woman can have up to 12 hours irregardless of her light or heavy flow. The slightly longer design gives the cervix and the fluid more room in the cup to avoid leaks etc.

The Large Cup
The large size is ideal for women with heavy to very heavy flow especially the sort of heavy flow caused by uterine fibroids, Pelvic Inflammatory disease, polyps, cysts, hormonal imbalance and the more common endometriosis. This is also ideal for heavy flow caused by IUD's (contraceptive inter-uterine devices). Or women who are wider "down there" due to multiple births or episiotomies.

Rounded Cup Bottom
Another factor to bear in mind in designing a cup is POKING. Since we all know by now a menstrual cup may poke you down there if it's "funnel" shaped and has a pointed end with possibly short solid or hallow stem or solid tab. Because some new brands want to take the "safe" road and just look like a Diva Cup or Lunette Cup for quick market entry and acceptance, a lot of  brands have this same funnel shape that WILL poke due to its pointed end instead of "rounding out" their cup bottom to avoid poking from this sharp end and tab. Rounded bottoms, we feel, should be standard by now, especially so the pointed end doesn't break a virgin's hymen. This is why the "rounded bottom" as a safety measure, comes standard with our cups, like air bags in a car, so that our cups don't poke down there. There is no risk of it entangling the hymen or breaking it.

Warning: Toxic Chemicals in Pads and Tampons

Tuesday 17 June 2014

Women on average have their period once a month for forty years of their life, and pick from a vast array of pad and tampon companies who market to women that their products will make them feel “fresh and clean” or “promote confidence.” The feminine hygiene industry promises these products will bring better health, but they do just the opposite.  The companies gloss over the safety of their products and are not forthcoming about the ingredient list of their products, and with good reason.

While many women use tampons and pads without giving it a second thought, most women would be extremely disturbed to learn the ingredient list. Upon investigation, pads and tampons contain ingredients such as chlorine dioxide, methyldibromo glutaronitrile, polyethylene, and other contaminants. These products come in contact with some of the thinnest skin of the human body and get absorbed directly into the blood stream, increasing risk for the toxic chemicals to accumulate in vital organs. According to research done by Women’s Voices, pads and tampons are full of harmful and toxic chemicals that have been linked to side effects such as hormone disruption, cancer, birth defects, and infertility, allergic reactions, and endocrine disruption. Many of the components of tampons and pads are dangerous for the body. The plastic applicator is made of phthalates, which is a plastic known to deregulate gene expression. The synthetics of the tampon material restrict airflow and can promote bacteria growth. The white color of the tampon is achieved by chlorine bleach, which can create toxic dioxin (EPA report).  This can lead to complications such as abnormal tissue and cell growth. In addition to being harmful for the body, pads and tampons are terrible for the environment, as most are made from crude oil plastic and each pad is the equivalent of four plastic bags.

With so many risks, women should start moving away from pad and tampon use and look to new and innovative feminine hygiene products, such as the menstrual cup. There are no health risks associated with the cup, and no harmful chemicals go into your body. Women need to be informed about what they are putting into their bodies and should be warned about the danger of pads and tampons. Be the change your body (and your wallet) wants. Cup Up!

What is a Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup and How is it Better for You?

Monday 9 June 2014

http://www.luvur-body.com
A menstrual Cup is a small bell shaped re-usabe silicone device inserted into the vaginal cavity which is used as an alternative to pads and tampons. It is folded and inserted similar to a tampon and once inserted properly, it cannot be felt in the vagina. For years, women have been faced with one of two options when it comes to menstruation—tampons or pads only. Many women agree that neither of these options suit their lifestyle. However, there is also a third innovative possibility that is not only cheaper, more sanitary, and more environmentally friendly, but also more comfortable—something every woman desires during that particular time of month! Now, women are able to choose an option that allows them to carry on throughout their day with less concern about their period. The menstrual cup is the answer that women have been waiting for! The Luv Ur Body menstrual cup allows women to experience a higher quality of protection than any other feminine hygiene product offered and proves to be one of the safest options out there. The Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup is re-usable for 3 years. Due to the muscular nature of the vagina, a Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup will not widen a woman’s vaginal canal any more than the insignificant widening associated with sexual intercourse. Large size is suitable for women with heavy flow or women who have given birth before vaginally or by C-Section while medium size is for women with light to medium flow or women who have not had a vaginal or C-section birth.

 What’s it made with?

A menstrual cup is made with a soft, flexible silicone. This particular medical grade silicone is the same material used for the creation of artificial hearts, valves, internal medical tubing (e.g. catheter tubing), sex toys, baby feeding bottle teats as used by the medical industry so women should take comfort in knowing that this material is implantable in the human body for an extended period of time and has been used internally in humans for decades by the medical industry as well as the sex toy industry. Not to mention, because it is a high-quality medical grade silicone it is created with antibacterial properties which goes one step further in protecting women’s health. The first menstrual cup called the “Tessaway Menstrual cup” was made in 1932 in the USA and there are over 25 brands worldwide today.  There are more brands of Menstrual Cups globally than there are of tampons.

How it Works

The process is actually very simple. First, assume a relaxed position, as you would if you were inserting a tampon. Next, you must fold the menstrual cup so that it can easily fit into the opening of the vagina. When inserted, releasing the folded menstrual cup will cause the cup to “pop open” naturally thus creating a “leak proof seal and suction” in the vaginal cavity.  The Luv Ur Body menstrual cup will then remain in place for 12 hours on average as it collects the fluid that passes through the vagina during normal menstruation.

Once the cup is full, you simply pinch the base to “break the seal” remove the cup, empty and flush away in the toilet and wash it thoroughly (you may use a few drops of any good brand of feminine wash) and it is ready for reinsertion if your period is still on. Simply boil for 15mins or disinfect with Milton solution or tablet at the end of period and store till next month in enclosed free pouch. The insertion and removal is very similar to that of a tampon or contraceptive diaphragm. There are several ways to fold a menstrual Cup for insertion please visit our website for more fold options. This process is similar to placing a bucket directly under a tap.

The Advantages

Made with 100% Medical Grade Silicone
There are a number of questions that women may have before purchasing Menstrual Cups.  At the top of most people’s mind will be safety. Is this product really safe? The answer is, YES absolutely! As mentioned, the Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup is made with quality medical grade silicone approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States and this material has already been introduced, accepted, and rated by medical professionals for decades.

No Connection to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
Because the menstrual cup captures fluid rather than absorbs it—there is no connection to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) associated with tampons and there has never been a case of TSS linked to Menstrual Cups usage since 1932.  When you compare the menstrual cup to tampons not only do you eliminate the threat of TSS, but there is also a reduced concern about the product becoming lodged in the vaginal cavity due to over absorption causing infection. Pads and tampons are made from strong industrial bleaches used to whiten the material. These bleaches contain cancer causing dioxins.

Heavy Flow
Since the menstrual cup does not absorb menstrual fluid, vaginal fluids or urine, women do not have any of the unpleasant odors at the end of the day associated with tampons due to the tampon rope absorbing urine and vaginal fluids. Menstrual Cups are thus ideal for swimming. They are also best for women with a very heavy flow as it gives them the much needed peace of mind and break from changing their pad or tampon. So much that for such women, there is no more need to double pads or double a pad and wear a tampon. It can be worn at night. It’s also useful for spotting associated with contraceptive Intrauterine Devices (IUD’s) more commonly known as the “coil” instead of using a pad or tampon for combating this spotting.

Peachy Texture
Some women may be concerned about the sanitation of the removal, insertion and re-use of the Luv Ur Body menstrual cup. Taking care of your menstrual cup is same as caring for your underwear which is re-usable also, one cannot catch any infections from such things if adequate personal hygiene is maintained. First, you must compare the cup to a pad. A pad is messy, has to be changed often, and can be very uncomfortable. Each time a woman has to urinate or defecate, she has the unpleasant ordeal of looking at a blood soaked pad. The Luv Ur Body menstrual cup has what is known as a “peachy texture” and thus will not have any blood on it when removed from the vagina. Because the menstrual fluid is collected directly from the cervix, the inside of the vaginal canal remains clean as opposed to when blood flows down the canal unto a pad or tampon. The Luv Ur Body menstrual cup also allows women an option that doesn’t involve sitting in their own menstrual blood or having to see the menstrual fluid for 12 hours because it instead collects the fluid within and is emptied & flushed down the toilet only once or twice daily. Disposal issues (wrapping, burning, rinsing) associated with pads/tampons are eliminated.

No Odors
Now, when comparing the menstrual cup to a tampon there are also some advantages in terms of sanitation. While the cup has to be removed in much the same manner as a tampon, there is no contact with the fluid as it is stored within the confines of the silicone cup. Plus, the fluid can be deposited directly in the toilet rather than the woman having to locate a trash can to discreetly throw out a tampon. Because the menstrual cup captures the fluid internally, there is little to no odor that is present when wearing a pad or tampon. Pads and tampon ropes come in contact with outside air which kick starts the fermentation process that causes these unpleasant odors and heat associated with use of these products.  Keep in mind that the Luv Ur Body menstrual cup doesn’t interfere with the natural properties of the vagina or leave cotton wool or rayon strands inside the vaginal cavity.

Economical
Another concern that some women may have is cost. For something this ground-breaking, you may be worried you will be paying an arm and a leg for the comforts this product has to offer. Actually, you couldn’t be further from the truth. On average, menstrual cups cost about $27 per cup. That is certainly more expensive than a box of tampons or pads, but you have to consider that the cup can be re-used for several years.  The Luv Ur Body menstrual cup offers women an economic advantage that no other hygiene product does! Many women that use tampons spend up to $30 on different absorbencies of tampons and panty liner per month and this is about the cost of a menstrual cup, while women that buy Pads will spend up to $125 in 4-5 months. So in the long term, a Luv Ur Body menstrual cup which costs just $28, is much cheaper.

Decreases Your Environmental Foot Print
Yet another consideration of the menstrual cup is the overall environmental benefit. Think about how many pads and tampons fill up the landfill every single year. A staggering One Billion pads or more get thrown away at landfills worldwide annually and the average women uses about 20,000 pads during her menstruating lifetime.  Multiply that by over two billion menstruating women on earth today and you have a fair idea of the adverse environmental impact of pads and tampons. Most Pads are not bio-degradable and don’t decompose. The Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup is re-usable thus decreasing your environmental footprint.

The Face Behind Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cups

Thursday 5 June 2014

Nwadiuto Onuoha, founder and inventor Luv Ur Body
Nwadiuto Onuoha, legal communicator, inventor protecting women’s health

I came across a product and was intrigued to find out that the particular one I saw was invented by a Nigerian female legal practitioner. After carrying out my research, I contacted her and she graces my Leading Woman page this week.

Nwadiuto Olamma Onuoha is the company secretary/chief legal and regulatory officer for Helios Towers Nigeria, the leading tower collocation service provider in West Africa. She attended Queen Mary College, University of London, where she obtained an LL.M in Communications Law and Regulation. She has over 14 years experience in corporate law, telecoms legal and regulatory advisory with particular focus on the Middle East Africa region (MEA).

Prior to joining Helios Towers Nigeria, Nwadiuto had worked in almost all segments of the Nigerian telecommunications sector including the role of AGM, head, legal and regulatory/company secretary in Visafone Communications (CDMA), and at senior manager level in Airtel Nigeria (GSM). She has also served as chief legal and regulatory officer for UNOTELOS, a value-added service company, and CCIC FZ, a Dubai-based interconnect clearing and financial reconciliation company.

She is mom to beautiful 11-year-old Oyindamola and is the inventor of the ‘Luv ur Body’ brand of menstrual cups for women, a leading menstrual cup brand sold globally. Nwadiuto grew up mostly in Miami Florida, Texas, and partly in Nigeria where she had a loving, secure middle-class upbringing with focused parents who made the sacrifices necessary at that time to give her and her siblings the needed exposure to other cultures and people as well as a well-rounded education. This exposure fed her appetite for reading, exploring new things and eventually the push towards studying law as a profession.

A menstrual cup is a small silicone bell-shaped device inserted vaginally like a tampon to collect a woman’s menstrual flow internally. It is said to be safer, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and generally regarded as a more convenient alternative to pads and tampons and without side effects. How then did the legal beauty find herself inventing menstrual cups and championing its course for three years now?

“I decided in 2011 to invent my own menstrual cup purely out of ‘need’. I had never been one to use pads and needed something more convenient, leak- and odour-proof than the tampons I was using. Something that would give me more worry-free hours without having to check if my skirt was stained each time I stood up,” she tells me.

“I knew menstrual cups had been in existence since 1926 but were not available in Nigeria and that just like me, a lot of women suffer from heavy flow, were tired of doubling pads or doubling pads with tampons and needed relief from friction sore and sogginess. So I thought to re-create the concept and share it with other women. Since the menstrual cup only needs to be emptied every 12 hours, as a frequent flyer and someone who experiences pretty heavy flow due to uterine fibroids, I’ve found the menstrual cups invaluable and it works better for me,” she says, adding that she is glad the menstrual cup she invented is doing well both locally and internationally under the brand name ‘Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup’.

The ‘Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup’ has been referred to as a top-notch product because it’s the largest in volume capacity available on the market and is the first and only menstrual cup that is aesthetically engraved all over, aside from the basic advantages of menstrual cups generally. The engraving on the ‘Luv Ur Body Menstrual Cup’ acts as slight friction/resistance with the bumpy inner wall of the vagina called rugae to prevent the menstrual cup from slipping or sliding out when a woman bends down during bowel movement, coughing, sneezing or laughing. All other brands are smooth outside and tend to slip out. The vent-shaped suction aids greater suction release during removal for emptying, she tells me.

Asked about the duration of its usage, Nwadiuto explains that due to its ample capacity, the menstrual cup gives a woman up to 12 hours odour- and leak-proof menstrual protection, even on very heavy flow days. “It is so comfortable it can’t be felt once fully inserted vaginally. It’s re-usable and thus is more cost-effective. It’s more eco-friendly because it eliminates waste disposal issues associated with non-biodegradable feminine hygiene products like pads and tampons,” she says.

Safety is indeed very vital, I am sure you will agree with that. On that premise, I ask her about the safety of the product and what approval measures have been put in place and Olamma confidently tells me it is completely safe to use as it eliminates the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) associated with tampons and reduces the risk of ovarian and cervical cancer associated with pads and tampons due to the dioxins and free radicals in the chlorine used to bleach them white, not to mention the additives and adhesives these pads and tampons contain.

“Our brand is made out of bio-compatible medical grade silicone approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the USA, NAFDAC, and performance tested by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and not plastic or rubber. Medical grade silicone is trusted and used by the medical industry because it’s implantable in the human body for decades and does not support the growth of micro-organisms. That’s why it’s used for artificial hearts, kidneys, and all medical tubings like catheters.

So, it’s 100 percent safer,” she informs me. So, how has Olamma’s legal background helped her in the running of her business? “I’ve been a lawyer for over 14 years now and it helped me greatly during the registration of all intellectual property rights for the product in 32 countries worldwide and all the regulatory approvals needed with global regulators like the FDA, NAFDAC, SON and patent offices, not to mention conclusion of all contracts necessary to get from concept to product stage. I didn’t spend a kobo on legal fees,” she explains. Findings reveal that the shape makes for an easy insertion process and fits comfortably in the vaginal cavity. The design, texture, and quality of the menstrual cup are what Nwadiuto tells me make this a trusted product all over the world. The first menstrual cup called the “Tessaway menstrual cup” was made in the USA in 1932, and there are over 25 brands worldwide today. There are more brands of menstrual cups globally than there are of tampons.
